40 lawyers sue Komodo text message operator

The Indonesian Legal Supremacy Committee (KSHI), which consists of around 40 lawyers, says it will file charges against P2K, the NGO responsible for text message votes in support of Komodo Island in the New7Wonders competition.

KSHI lawyer Achmad Salim said that the committee would demand a transparent audit on the money obtained by the NGO through the text messages.

He said that the committee would also sue individuals connected to the case, namely P2K chairwoman Emmy Hafild, Komodo envoy Jusuf Kalla and New7Wonders President Bernard Weber.

The charges, along with their demands, would be filed soon at the Central Jakarta District Court, Salim said.

“We demand that the operator of the Komodo text message service donate all of its proceedings to the conservation of Komodo Island,” he said on Friday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation named Komodo Dragon Park as one of its seven world wonders of nature on Nov. 11, after the island had scored more votes than most of the 28 finalists in the competition.

P2K had said that the money raised by the group from the nomination would go directly to campaign for the island as well to paying the license fee for the bid.

The New7Wonders Foundation, however, asserted that no money from the text message voting campaign would go directly to the island.
